Mahendra Singh Dhoni's marriage to Sakshi gave everyone a shock in 2010. The two got married on July 4. Kolkata's Sakshi Singh Rawat's family is associated with Dehradun. Although Mahendra Singh Dhoni was born in Ranchi, Jharkhand, his family is from Almora district. Thus Sakshi and Dhoni were considered childhood friends because of Sakshi and Dhoni's relationship with Uttarakhand. Sakshi and Dhoni's family knew each other long back.

Dhoni's father Pan Singh settled in Ranchi due to a job in MECON (Government of India Steel Production Plant). Sakshi and Dhoni's father were partners in MECON. Sakshi's father later became the executive director of the Kenoi Group's Binaguri Tea Company. Sakshi and Mahendra Singh Dhoni were studying at DAV Shyamali School in Ranchi. Later Sakshi's family settled in Dehradun. Sakshi's grandfather was a retired Forest Department officer in Dehradun.

Sakshi was further educated at Welhelm in Dehradun and later earned a degree from the Institute of Hotel Management in Aurangabad. Sakshi completed her training at the Taj Bengal Hotel in Kolkata.

Sakshi and Dhoni met again at the Taj Bengal Hotel in 2008 when the Indian team stayed at the Taj for the match at Eden Gardens with Pakistan. Yudhjeet Dutta was a friend of Sakshi and Dhoni and they met both of them.>> Later, Dhoni took Yakshi's number and messaged him. At first Sakshi could not believe that Dhoni had messaged her.
